Fearless Fun Friday: Dancing on the Dock….

I have just a few words before you view this video.

In life, I can be quite bold, I can be quite fearless.  When I choose to be.  I make the choice to embrace each moment, even if I’m afraid.  Life is too precious for me to pick and choose only the moments that are comfortable; I *want* to learn the lessons, I *want* to experience all that there is in life.  So…I wanted to do something fearless for my Fearless Fun Friday series.  The thing is I can be pretty daring anyway, so my challenge to myself was to do someting different that stretched me a bit.  My new blogging friend, Joy T, at Being Joy overcomes her fears to dance on her blog, so I figured I would try.  What could happen except I grow a bit???  Ah….except I had a few fears about this whole process…fears I just pushed through, because in general making this video was fun, and I’m glad to share it with you.

This is how I face my fears, big or small.  I ask God and the Universe for a blessing to walk me through exactly as I should be walking, not as I wish to walk….then, I address the fear, face it head on, and I try to buffer it as I face it.  So, on this particular day, just a few moments before we made the video, I decided okay let’s do it.  And I “jumped”.  That’s exactly what I do in life, don’t hesitate, just jump. On this day there were factors that could have prohibited me from trying at all–isn’t that the way fear works..there are a always one million excuses as to why I can’t do something I’m afraid of, so it’s my job to stand in faith and release the excuses as they pop in.  My children and I have fun together, and they loved the idea of a video because we had never done *that* before…so we made our first ever video….. My son was jazzed, my daughter was ill with many complications so not quite jazzed but wanted to participate.  We are dancing on the dock in front of my boat, so my one neighbor was like what in the world are you doing?  But laughing because we were cracking up, so that sealed it for me.

If I can make you smile, if I can capture the joy my family has together and make you think about the joy in your life, if I can share with you views of my harbor, my boat, me…and that makes you dream a little for yourself and then take some steps to realize those dreams…then shoot, I shall dance away!

We did one take because we were late for a commitment, so the drone you hear in the background is airplanes flying overhead. Once we started, we had a bit of an audience… my neighbor on a huge powerboat behind us came out to see what we were doing.  My neighbors directly across from the boat peeked out.  My neighbor down the dock laughed when I told him.  But the best part, the best part is that at the end well, you’ll see but my aw shucks is accidentally timed with the end of the music, so I couldn’t come back and fix it, I left it as is…aw shucks, I tried–so enjoy:)

This is for you, Joy T, because you inspire me to step outside of my comfort zone as you do…

And this is for you, Tess, The Bold Life, because you challenge me to be “Bold”, which I already am, but I will take it farther in this Fearless Fun Friday series.  Which then allows me to take it farther in life, and  I will enjoy each and every step!

And this is for *you*–each and every person who shares with me– because this leg of the journey I am on is so full of delight, beauty, joy, peace, love, grace, creativity, passion..and I wouldn’t be here in this moment, joyfully dancing outside of my boat, in a video that I had to post on Youtube to include it here (oh yeah–*that* is far far outside of my comfort zone!!), if it weren’t for *you* and all that you share. I soak it all in, and I thank you…

From my heart to yours:

Dancing on the Dock to

“Grace Kelly”

One more thing. When I am done creating anything, I  then ask God and the Universe to bless it and allow it touch whomever necessary, and I thank God and the Universe for allowing me to go through the process and whatever good came out of it.  I then let the creation go.  Each time the children and I watch this video together we laugh.  I love that about my family, we share together…..I love that about this blogging community as well, we share together.  I faced my fear because Joy T did, and perhaps someone reading this will think of something fun and step outside of their box.  Energy is fluid and magnifies as it flows….

Each moment is precious…it is my choice to enjoy the fun along the way:)  May you enjoy the fun presented to you this weekend….

Thank you for joining me today!

Much peace,

Joy

You guys are so much fun! I love this, thanks for sharing. It made me smile, and that’s always a good thing!

    Joy!
I LOVE the video of all of you getting your hula on!!! Way fun!! And – it reminds me of a rafting adventure my family went on a couple of years ago, in the wilderness of Idaho, for several days. One of our guides had made himself a hula hoop he could fold up to carry with him. Once we were out on the water, he put it together and did all sorts of amazing things with it! And then – the hula hoop became that evenings highlight as it was passed around from person to person around the campfire! What great memories this is bringing up for me today!!

You and your kids are such a delight to watch in this!!! I’m smiling and laughing with all of you!

      Lance,
      Thank you!
A rafting adventure sounds awe-some!!! I’ve been in Colorado and had a blast–even though I was scared to death of the rapids…..A hula at the campfire is a twist I’ve yet to see..could be tons of fun:)
Glad you’re laughing with us–*that’s* why we shared it:)

  3. #5 by Joy Tanksley on May 21, 2010 - 2:31 pm

    THANK YOU!!!!!

    1. Your kids are absolutely lovely. Thank you for sharing them with us!
    2. Your dress is GORGEOUS! Oh my goodness. I love it so much!
    3. I love the hula hooping twist! What fun! I seem to be getting a lot of hula hooping messages from the universe. I impulsively purcahsed a hoop about a month ago and since then I’m seeing hula hoops everywhere. I was an awesome hooper as a kid but for some reason I’m having trouble re-learning. It’s frustrating, but I am now more determined than ever after watching your video!
    4. Three cheers for first takes! I’ve done three or four takes on all of my dancing videos and I always end up using the first one because it’s the most authentic, which is what this is all about – just being 100% who we are.

    Love you bunches!

    • #6 by unfoldingyourpathtojoy on May 21, 2010 - 10:01 pm

      Joy,
      1. Thank you!
      2. It’s one of my favorite sundresses. I’m a Joss Stone wannabe/fan….so this is my Joss dress.
      3. The hula hoops are weighted, and we all actually dance very well with them. Any dance you can do without them, you can do with them. I was so nervous I forgot pretty much everything, but we’ve all won hula contests, so do have skill:) It’s ultra fun, and super exercise!
      4. First takes are much like intuition. The thing is I would have preferred polished, but we captured the Spirit of the challenge so well, any other take wouldn’t have been the same. Ah well…….

      Thank you for the inspiration!!!

You’ve got the moves!! This is wonderful. Good for you! Keep having fun and making memories like these–you are precious!!

      Hi Jodi,
Thank you!! It was tons of fun…and made my blogging friends smile, so it was well worth it…
My children are used to new and different…now I guess we should work on routine….

    Hi Joy

Fantastic 🙂 Oh I had a huge smile on my face as I watched this. YOU are good girl! Wow can you swing that hoola – and I love your dress by the way, it is so flowy and summery, just so perfect with this whole video. Nice ending as you mentioned too how it all came together. No wonder your neighbors came out, you guys were igniting them to have fun too!

Well, thanks for the weekend wishes and much love to you as well as you guys enjoy yourselves in so many fun ways 🙂

    • #10 by unfoldingyourpathtojoy on May 22, 2010 - 1:42 am

      Evita,
Thank you! I have a huge smile as I read your comment 🙂
The thing is, I am the one who always coaxes someone “out” so it shouldn’t surprise me when we are joined…and “we” are the ones who pretty much entertain our marina with our antics:)
Thank you for the weekend wishes…we actually have the next two days to spend together and with friends at a theme park on Saturday then hiking on Sunday. It’s been a rather uphill week so I’m balancing it out for us with fun and nature:)

  6. #11 by Angela Ponzini on May 22, 2010 - 1:04 am

So fun to see all of you. Made us all smile. We made our own hula hoops a while back. HUGE ones. Didn’t think of adding music.. that will make it more fun. !
How tall is Kevin? He looks like he has surpassed you…. Meghan is 5’2″.
    Miss you guys

    • #12 by unfoldingyourpathtojoy on May 22, 2010 - 1:38 am

      Angela,
Wow it is so awesome to see you here–thank you!!! My family misses yours tons!
You know Kev is an entertainer, so when I told him I might do a dance video he was very much into it. He picked the song and hammed it up:) And he’s 4’11 so is almost my height…
The kids always enjoy when I jump in on an adventure, so they were glad to join me….

    Hi Joy,

It takes so much courage to face fears. Therefore, I think what you did was fantastic!

Unfortunately, the video is not showing up on my screen. If you have time, could you e-mail the YouTube video link to me so I can check it out?!

Stay bold and have a great day in California!

    • #14 by unfoldingyourpathtojoy on May 24, 2010 - 5:02 am

      Hi Greg,
I don’t know about courage but I have tons of faith….that’s the only way I face my fears…send up a little request to God and the Universe, then take the first step…and watch as the experience just unfolds….

  8. #15 by Zeenat{Positive Provocations} on May 22, 2010 - 3:56 am

HI Joy and Gang of hula hoopers!
You guys are so awesome! So full of life…I loved this video…and your dress was so beautiful.
Give your kids a big hug from me..and tell them i said they are sooo talented! I especially loved how your son ended his hula hooping dance…with an awesome “strike a pose” 🙂
So much love to you and the kids,
    Z~

    • #16 by unfoldingyourpathtojoy on May 24, 2010 - 5:00 am

      Hi Z,
Thank you! We give you a huge hug right back!!!
My son is quite in his element when entertaining, and my daughter is usually right with him, but she was pretty sick that day….Still wanted to be a part of it all though:) I am blessed to be their mom, and enjoy every moment we spend together!

  9. #17 by Keith on May 22, 2010 - 12:46 pm

    Hello Joy,

I smiled all the way through your video! You guys are so cool and I love the hula hoops. Once a month our local NPR station has what they call “Waterfront Wednesday” down at a park on the river where there is live music, food etc and it’s free to go. There are people dancing and there’s a group of “hula-hoopers” that are always there and it is so great to watch them You awesome display of hula-hooping skills reminds me of that!

I admire your boldness and the way you look your fears right in the face and say “bring it!” Thank you for the smiles and inspiration.

    • #18 by unfoldingyourpathtojoy on May 24, 2010 - 4:58 am

      Hi Keith,
Thank you! I do tend to look my fears in the face, because once they’ve appeared I’d rather take care of them then and not after they’ve had time to build and become unbreakable……
I think I would absolutely love “Waterfront Wednesday”! How fun is that:)

  10. #19 by Megan "JoyGirl!" Bord on May 22, 2010 - 3:15 pm

My first thought when I saw this: “HOLY CRAP! Her kids are good at hoola-hooping.” My thought when I saw YOU do it, too: “Holy CRAP! Joy’s good at hoola-hooping!”

What an awesome video to watch, and man, you guys have THE moves!

    Fearless Fridays = FANTASTIC FUN!

    Love to you all!

    • #20 by unfoldingyourpathtojoy on May 24, 2010 - 4:57 am

      Megan,
*You* could hula with us….they are weighted dance hoops so after a bit you get the hang of it…just to avoid bruises on your hips! One of the most fantastic hoop stories I have is when I first went to check out the drum circle we brought the hoops because I didn’t yet have a drum. One drummer played to my hula hooping…fantastic energy…almost as fantastic as belly dancing! The kids hula hooped for hours, and it was such a great fit that I now go back to the circle with my drum!
I want us all to experience Fearless Fridays…..

  11. #21 by The Exception on May 22, 2010 - 8:03 pm

This was fabulous! I didn’t have a chance to view yesterday but have been waiting for the chance since I read the post. I loved it and the kids were great! Keep right on dancing and loving life!

    • #22 by unfoldingyourpathtojoy on May 24, 2010 - 4:53 am

      The Exception,
Thank you! I do love life, and the children have been raised to love life, so we tend to explore and create…..

  12. #23 by Tess The Bold Life on May 23, 2010 - 12:32 pm

    Joy,
What fun…I’m thinking how bold! Then I decided she needs to get a bold award. I think I will have to make one up and send it over. Your kids are adorable and soon I’m thinkin they’ll have blogs of their own.

And I love the Joss Stone look on you. And you certainly have the look. Thanks for being you and sharing your Joy with all of us. I wish I was on the boat;)

    • #24 by unfoldingyourpathtojoy on May 24, 2010 - 4:52 am

      Hi Tess,
It was quite fun! My children go along with my antics because they see me experience creative freedom so they revel in their own as well. I once asked my son what he would do on the first day he had his own place, and he said ‘absolutely nothing’, which I completely understand…what they have allowed to manifest in their little lives is often far more than most adults experience…little one is going to need a break from a lifetime of excitement:)
      Thank you for the compliments!
I often wish you were on the boat with us as well..we’d have a blast!

  13. #25 by Wilma Ham on May 23, 2010 - 9:55 pm

Way to go, show the Joy that you are! It is in the do-ing that we really get to experience what we are a stand for and get to share that experience with others as well.
I bet soon the whole marina is dancing on the docks and what a community that will create. Your Joy must attract joy and isn’t it lovely that your beautiful children are so into joining you. It just is absolutely gorgeous, you all are beautiful and what a way to bring out the Joy in everybody. I also love that you are inspired by your blogging friends Joy and Tess. That is so hope giving, that is so what connecting is all about. Love to all of you, Wilma

    • #26 by unfoldingyourpathtojoy on May 24, 2010 - 4:48 am

      Hi Wilma,
You are absolutely correct–it *is* the process that contains it all…which is why I choose to embrace each moment.
My neighbors are used to my little family and all that we “bring”. I am “famous” for potlucks, dock parties, music, bringing people together…..we live in paradise, we 8should* enjoy it, and it’s much better to enjoy within the context of a neighborhood family than by ourselves:)

  14. #27 by Jannie Funster on May 24, 2010 - 12:14 am

Did you know I can make a hula hoop go around one whole time!?!? Yep! People come from miles and miles around to witness my incredible feat. And feet — now that my toenails are all sparkly pink and such.

    🙂

    xo

    • #28 by unfoldingyourpathtojoy on May 24, 2010 - 3:35 am

Yay for sparkly pink toenails! And yay for trying to hula:) You could actually provide the music and vocals while we hula…..

  15. #29 by Tony Single on May 24, 2010 - 10:28 pm

Fabulous! I’m grinning like a Cheshire Cat right now, and feeling a little envy too… I’m such a clutz that I could never hope to hula hoop my way through life like you guys clearly are! What professionals! 😛

    • #30 by unfoldingyourpathtojoy on May 26, 2010 - 4:27 am

      Tony,
I love the image of the Cheshire Cat–thank you!!!
We hula hoop through life…laugh, have fun, dance around….put in those terms you can do the same:)

  16. #31 by David Cain on May 25, 2010 - 2:01 am

You did it. You made me smile.

    🙂

    • #32 by unfoldingyourpathtojoy on May 26, 2010 - 4:26 am

      David,
*That* truly makes my heart happy because my goal in life is to allow my antics to make even the serious ones smile inside…outside too, but to me smiling inside is what matters most…so thank *you*!!!

  17. #33 by Hilary on May 26, 2010 - 8:40 am

Hi Joy .. that cheered me up .. or sent me into paroxyms of misery .. seeing you in your warm clothes in the sun by the beach .. while I’m here in the cold and the wet (at least it’s not snow & it’s not freezing!) again .. but I laughed as you hulaed your way to happiness and joy .. interesting to know a little about the hoops – hadn’t realised there were special ones … we had some when we were kids and I managed a bit .. but can’t dance and have no sense of rhythm .. so love music .. but beyond that it’s awful to watch!

Still I can enjoy too though .. I remember it was good exercise & I’ve seen the hoops here too .. happy days ahead .. & summr might turn up here sometime .. looks like June now! Hilary

    • #34 by unfoldingyourpathtojoy on May 26, 2010 - 4:29 pm

Oh no Hilary–not paroxysms of misery–LOL!!! Delete the video then!
I was raised in upstate NY so had a lifetime of snow, being snowed in, temperatures with wind chill factor far below zero. So, I am loving So CA!!!!!
And Hilary, we use hoops to express our joy…but mainly my goal was to provide a smile, and to encourage us all to step out and play–regardless of circumstances play adds joy to life, and joy is quite a splendid thing to have:) So laugh with us, then play in your own way:)

  18. #35 by Jan on May 26, 2010 - 7:38 pm

Big smiles here. You all have rhythm! May all of us laugh and play much more than we do now. Flow on…
