Self Love Series: Intro and Let Your Colors Burst!

Hello! Welcome to my peace filled place..

Introduction to Self-Love Series

There are sections of my town that are inner city, low income, highly populated by gang members; each with a story as significant as any that a master storyteller could weave.  I know these stories because I was married to a local gang officer–gang violence impacted his work, and his work greatly impacted my life and contributed to the demise of my marriage.  Also, because many of the “clientele” in ER at our hospital are gang related, gang activity impacts staff at my work.

This evening, I was wearing my hospital scrubs when I stopped in to a local restaurant for take out food.  The server noticed my scrubs–which clearly have the hospital name imprinted on them– and said I bet it will be a tough night.  As he spoke he looked at me with such pain, confusion, fear and he held out his hand.  I couldn’t help but notice his tattoos inked over his arms..the details.. I don’t know why he held out his hand, but I took it and shook it warmly as I spoke.  As I met his eyes, I smiled a smile of hope and love and something internal made me say: “I  still believe in the goodness of people you know..each and every one of them”.  And he said, thank you.

This month of January, I am opening my blog space to the theme of self-love.  For people such as the man who served me tonight.  For my loved ones and friends.  And for *you*…

Because I do believe in the goodness of people.  I do believe that Love is the answer.  Each and every time, to any question you may have.  I do believe that I can only give to you what I have, so when I focus on self-love it is to ensure that what I share with you is healthy, genuine, whole, pure.  When I love myself, I am loving you.  Because I love you so, I also focus energy on loving me.

I read a comment once that said something like ‘everyone speaks of the importance of self-love, but no one teaches how to do it’.  I believe self-love is as any other love; it is as easy as opening your heart fully to your self.  In my personal life, I release the concept of “self” so that I may open my heart fully to the moment; there is no ‘self’ as I open my heart to Universe.  However, I do recognize that is radical for the majority, so for this series we will recognize self as an entity; as that entity, self “needs” love to live fully.  As we explore self-love, and as the concept becomes familiar to you, self will expand to become “nothing and everything”..

The love self requires is internal.  Applying external love to self is akin to applying a band-aid to a gaping wound.  It will temporarily do the job, but internal healing needs to take place for self to thrive.  We are made to thrive, to explore, experiment, delight..so an abundance of internal love is as necessary to that as fertile soil to a blossoming garden.  Self-love is our body’s nutrient.  External love is what we share together, the glue that bonds that heart connection is self-love.  This heeart connection through self-love is what we shall explore together this month.  Please feel free to email me if you have any questions or a specific angle you would like to explore…and as always, thank you for opening your heart to something that may be new and different!

Let Your Colors Burst!

This month, we are exploring self-love.  Today I am fascinated with the concept of color and coloring my world in my unique way.  When I learn, I prefer it to be fun, exciting, joy filled...oh yeah! So, let’s see, what color am I, what colors do I exude, and how do I color my world…

But first, what does this have to do with self-love?  Ah..before I color my world and impact you with my creations, I need to Know what colors I exude and to create out of joy and love so that what you receive will be joy filled and loved filled and enrich your life in some way.  When I share creations, I set the intent to create from my internal well, so I want my internal well to be overflowing with joy and love.

Thus, my colors represent joy and love: shades of yellow and orange, red and pinks, lavender, honey.. My colors represent my inner essence of peace: light blues.  My colors represent my infusion with nature: browns, greens, the white of the moon.  My colors are as radiant as the sunshine that I bask in, and they glisten as the moonbeams touch the harbor water surrounding me.  They wrap around you in a blanket of love and light, fold you in to love and peace, encourage you to create from your own internal fountain, inspire you to reach beyond that which you know to embrace magic more grand than you can imagine.

My colors are power filled.  My colors heal hearts.  My colors comfort souls.  My colors nourish physical selves.  My colors  celebrate life!  My colors are Love..genuine, pure, fresh, unconditional..Love!

As I write, I am listening to Katy Perry’s “Firework”…

Here is part of the chorus:

You just gotta ignite the light
And let it shine
Just own the night
Like the Fourth of July

Cause baby you’re a firework
Come on show ’em what your worth
Make ’em go “Oh, oh, oh!”
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby you’re a firework
Come on let your colors burst
Make ’em go “Oh, oh, oh!”
You’re gunna leave ’em fallin’ down-own-own…”

So, I say..think about your colors…You are the creator of the moment..what colors would you like to share?  “Come on show ’em what you’re worth!”…

Much peace,

Joy

    Joy,
This was beautiful. I could feel the words flowing from your heart to mine. I was right with you when the owner of the quick mart extended his hand to you, and when you said you believe in the goodness in each and every one of us –

I actually felt the connection to this man, and tears came to my eyes. The only reason we can feel so deeply is because we are one giant organism. We appear to be separate – each of us encased in our own earthly wrapping, but really if we could pull back and see all of humanity, and the Earth for that matter, as one giant tapestry we’d realize that each of us is a thread interwoven to create the whole.

When you pull out one thread – the whole piece unravels.

Love is all there is – and it is the answer to every problem and situation we face.

Thanks for sharing that beautiful song Joy! It would be a great song for teenagers to watch. I will remember this when I’m feeling discouraged.

Self-love… an important topic that cannot get enough attention, in my opinion, because it’s (maybe) the toughest love to give/accept. Just the other day, I received an email from a dear friend who suggested two things:
    1. Imagine if I was the last person left on earth. What criticisms could I possibly have if there was no one else to see or judge me? Our self-criticisms come from social conditioning, so if it was just me left on this beautiful planet, would I still view myself in such harsh light, or could I just be free and easy with myself?

    2. Look at a picture of myself from when I was a little girl, and see if I’m able to criticize her the way I criticize my adult self. This exercise was interesting because I realized there was an age at which I did begin criticizing myself – probably starting at age 7 or 8. Can you imagine? As a 4 or 5-year old, though, the world was my oyster and I was a happy little explorer. So it’s the 5-year old I need to carry with me, and remind myself that she’s me, and I’m her. We’re ONE, and I love “us.”

This will be an exciting month, dearest Joy! Thank you for tackling such an important topic!

      Hi Megan,
Thank you! January is a most exciting month..for there is much to explore, experience, enjoy:)
You are right to remind us of the innocence, wonder, joy, of child like love. Watching my children interact with the world is a pleasure, because they delight in these interactions. Just yesterday I was thinking how perfect that they trust they will have shelter, food, clothing, basics..so can enjoy life without ‘worries’..and how Universe implores us to do the same..They are in love because they choose love, and all that they create is from this source, because it has yet to be tainted.
As for criticism, I remind my self to treat my self as lovingly, as gently as I treat others..so I learned to speak to my self in the same ways I speak with you..I am the care taker of my “self” so I am learning to take excellent care of it:) It is a pleasure to share here what I have learned.

      Hi Moshe,
Thank you for visiting, and for your comment.
In general, we tend to skimp on self-love as we serve others or become cauth up in external. I know that the energy I create with is passed on within my creations, so I focus on allowing that well of creation to be genuine, pure, fresh..which means *I* am genuine, pure, fresh..I open my heart fully to my self as I do to You and all else:)

I often feel the words spoken to others have a profound impact on them. We don’t always know it but we have to know it happens.

    Happy New Year to you.

    Enjoy the journey.
